Labor Unions
Labor unions created and fueled the workers’ rights movement that has resulted
in a minimum wage, the five-day workweek, the right to take time off for illness or
family emergencies without being penalized, and access to many other benefits.
Some politicians now claim that labor unions are corrupt and only interfere with the
relationship between management and labor, but supporters argue that unions still have
an important role to play and may be essential in the effort to combat income inequality.
This issue looks at labor unions and their evolving role in America.

Health Conspiracies
Are there microchips in vaccines? Do cellphones cause cancer? Is the Food and Drug
Administration hiding a secret cure for cancer? More than half of Americans believe at
least one conspiracy theory regarding the healthcare system, and this misinformation
reflects the inherent incompatibility of managing public welfare through a system
designed to generate profit. This issue of The Reference Shelf looks at the origin and
impact of healthcare conspiracies in America.

U.S. National Debate Topic, 2025-2026:
Exploration & Development of the Arctic
This issue of The Reference Shelf covers the 2025 National Debate topic of the
exploration and development of the Arctic. Home to indigenous cultures for thousands
of years, the Greek explorer Pytheas traveled into the arctic from Britain in the 330s
BCE. This volume introduces some of the most pressing topics in this arena, including
the geopolitics of the region, Indigenous perspectives, natural resources, Arctic drilling,
and the militarization of the Arctic, to name a few. Debate participants will have ample
material to draw on to make their arguments.

Immigration & Border Control in the 21st Century
Migration caused by climate change and political instability has driven thousands from their
homes across North and South America, resulting in an unprecedented number of people
seeking to cross the border into the United States. The United States, wealthier and with
plentiful labor available, remains a key location for the displaced and desperate. This issue of
The Reference Shelf looks at the debate over policing the nation’s borders and weighs efforts to
address migration as a problem against the exploitation of border fears as a political tactic.

Space Exploration
Space may offer hope for the future of humanity in the form of unexplored resources
and scientific secrets, but humanity has only begun to scratch the surface of this
frontier. In the 2020s, space science is being driven less by scientific exploration and
more by tech company entrepreneurs, who are changing the way that space science
develops and evolves. This issue of The Reference Shelf looks at the state of space
exploration in the 21st century and explores a variety of views about how space
science and exploration could and should evolve in the future.
